The Largest Moth We Have Ever Seen Indoors!

By Scott

A few mornings ago, I was walking down the stairs when I heard a rustling sound near the bottom. I stepped back up, then down again. The sound happened again.

I looked more closely at the base of the stairs and saw a giant moth!

We keep a small plastic container nearby that I normally use to carry spiders outside. Clare is very afraid of spiders, so this is one of my regular household responsibilities. I picked up the container and crouched down to catch the moth.

At that exact moment, my phone slipped out of my shorts pocket and crashed onto the floor! The moth was startled and so was I!

It flew into the front room on the main floor. A curtain separates that space from the back of the house, so I closed the curtain and assumed the moth was contained.

For the next few days, we kept the curtain closed. We also kept the upstairs bedroom door closed, just in case it somehow escaped and travelled upstairs.

We did not see or hear the moth for several days, it seemed to have disappeared completely.

Until Clare screamed from upstairs that the moth was in her office!

I ran upstairs, found the plastic container again, and located the moth near the pedals of the electric piano. After several days of hiding somewhere in the house, it had chosen a musical location for its final appearance.

This time, I caught it successfully and released it far from the house. It was the largest moth either of us had ever seen indoors!
